Instead of using granulated sugar in meals, opt for unsweetened applesauce or honey. To avoid foods with trans fats, resist purchasing prepackaged baked goods and fast food. Make cookies and French fries at home with olive oil and grapeseed oil.

Even with healthy ingredient substitutes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol can present with no obvious symptoms. That is why getting regular screenings for these conditions can help to prevent more serious health conditions in the future. With these at-home and in-office measures, the dangers of salt, sugar, and trans fats can be largely alleviated.

Take a Saturday or Sunday afternoon to cook and freeze your dinners so that come Monday night, you’re not calling for a pizza delivery or Chinese takeout. The Sunrise Health System of Hospitals Awarded Re-certification as Primary Stroke Centers from the Joint Commission
Distinction recognizes hospitals for offering the best possible treatment for stroke patients
Las Vegas (April 4, 2014) — After undergoing on-site evaluations and demonstrating compliance with nationally developed standards for stroke care, the Sunrise Health System of Hospitals – Sunrise Hospital, MountainView Hospital and Southern Hills Hospital – have earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for re-certification as Primary Stroke Centers. Sunrise Health was the first system of Certified Primary Stroke Centers in Las Vegas.
In order to receive re-certification, the Sunrise Health System hospitals were evaluated by The Joint Commission — the leading healthcare accreditation and certification organization in the United States — using standards for stroke from the recommendations published by the Brain Attack Coalition and American Stroke Association. This includes an assessment of compliance with consensus-based national standards, effective use of primary stroke center recommendations and clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care and performance measurement and improvement activities.
“We are proud to achieve this distinction again from the Joint Commission,” said Todd P. Sklamberg, Chief Executive Officer at Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center. “Along with our Accredited Chest Pain Centers, both our heart and stroke care programs at all three hospitals provide optimal care for patients needing emergent care.”
The Certified Stroke Centers at each Sunrise Health Hospital offer diagnosis, treatment, education and outreach. A trained Stroke Team of doctors and nurses works to identify stroke symptoms as quickly as possible, beginning with emergency medical service workers in the field. By the time a patient arrives at the hospital, the Stroke Team is ready. The hospitals of Sunrise Health were first certified as primary stroke centers in 2009.
According to the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of serious, long-term disability. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every three minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

You go to the ER when you have a pressing health problem, but depending on the hospital, you might have to wait close to an hour to get medical attention. This video reports on how you can get the swift professional care you need.
To bring greater awareness of the ER wait time problem across the United States, the organization ProPublica has created an application that you can use to check on average emergency room wait times anywhere in the nation. The elderly often must contend with serious health conditions that young adults rarely experience. These medical crises frequently necessitate emergency room care for millions of senior citizens each year. Southern Hills Hospital encourages senior residents of the greater Las Vegas region to take the necessary precautionary measures to avoid the situations that most often lead to ER visits. In the event that an injury or illness demands emergency room attention, our emergency department offers capable care that caters to the needs of our elderly patients.
Upper Respiratory Infections
Upper respiratory infections frequently are the cause for senior trips to the ER . Pneumonia in particular can lead to serious health complications in seniors. The immune system can deteriorate with age, which can make it more difficult for a senior to successfully ward off the infection that causes pneumonia. Seniors who get pneumonia might also have existing medical conditions that complicate efforts to overcome their infection.
Age often plays a role in cardiovascular health. A lifetime of eating high-cholesterol foods, avoiding physical activity, and overlooking early risk factors can make seniors more susceptible to the effects of heart disease. When the arteries become weak from years of high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels, the chance of suffering a blood clot to the brain or a blood vessel rupture inside it increases. As a result, seniors may need emergency room care for stroke events more frequently than young adults.
Emergency room specialists often see seniors enter their facilities because of falls. With age, a person may become less stable when in motion. A lack of exercise can weaken muscles. Osteoporosis can debilitate bones. Cataracts and glaucoma can impair vision. These are some of the factors that can lead to an accidental fall that demands emergency room care.
Southern Hills Hospital offers comprehensive emergency room care that addresses the special needs of our senior patients. Call (702) 880-2100 to speak with an associate about the specialized services that our hospital provides the elderly residents of Las Vegas. Our iTriage Symptom Checker can help families alert our staff to impending ER visits as well.
